What a wonderful, yet difficult book to read! Geraldine Brooks’ vivid descriptions and excellent use of language from the period put me right in the village with Anna and the rest of the townsfolk. Through Anna’s eyes, I saw the horrors of the plague and felt the heartbreak they endured. This could have been a new favorite book of mine—however the ending made no sense to me and seemed unbelievable. Why Ms Brooks felt the need to make such a jarring left turn is a wonder (sorry-no pun was intended). Nevertheless, the ending did not “ruin” the book for me. This is a haunting tale that will stay with me for some time to come and a journey I’m glad I took. Highly recommended!
