The idea of a new novel by Jane Austen being “found” is likely every Austenite’s dream—at least it’s one of mine. So, it was an easy decision for me to get this book. Samantha, an Austen scholar on holiday in London, finds a fragment of a letter written by Jane Austen that sends her on a hunt to find a missing manuscript. I thought this would be a great little mystery book leading ultimately to the discovery of the manuscript. I became a bit disconcerted upon discovering that the manuscript was quickly found and that at least 2/3 of this book was the text of this missing manuscript—The Stanhopes. However, my concerns were quickly laid to rest. The Stanhopes is written in a tone and style that rings true to Jane Austen, and I quickly became immersed in the story. I started and finished this book in one weekend. I highly recommend it to any Austen fan that enjoys “fan fiction”. This has become my favorite “austen inspired” book.
